About Fotonet South: Support for new work

International Fellowships, Research Residencies & Bursaries

Bursaries

Bursaries were awarded in Summer 2002 to assist four artists in the region to make new work. There was no brief except that the work should not depend on a gallery exhibition and was to be presented by Summer 2003. The Bursaries were £2000 each.

Anna Cady - using pinhole cameras constructed out of the furniture of her own home, made images of her domestic space for billboards in Winchester and a website, annacady.com, which also incorporated stories and a virtual tour of Winchester. One image was printed for a very large billboard in the city centre and the website was launched in July 2003.

Lou Spence - Light Sky , panoramic projections, where the questionable notions of nature and natural are raised by the burning glow of light pollution in the night sky. The scenes become strangely redolent of a pictorial sunset image, presenting the viewer with a contradiction to conventional expectations of rural landscape imagery.
Exhibited with a specially made sound track by Mark Spence at the Xchange Gallery, Oxford. Curated by Susie Medley, Fotonet for Oxford Artweeks 2003.

Anna Fox - Dreamday a project with Selborne village junior school 2003, a book is to be published. Online exhibition on fotonet.org.uk

Mar Mateo - The Road . Mar Mateo was the photographer with a multidisciplinary project that investigated the buildings, history and inhabitants of a typical inner city residential road.

The artists are encouraged to look beyond the urban exteriors and study the new towns from new perspectives. The new work should be an individual response to looking at and learning more about these particular urban environments.
The Research Residencies were £3000 each.
