Michael Newgass

Michael Newgass grew up in an old Sussex house. It had neither electricity nor mains water supply but it stood alone in the middle of the woods and fields. The knowledge gained in childhood from the country people, and their attachment to the land and to the animals, has been the foundation of his work as a photographer. He is one of that dwindling band of people who has never lived in a town or even a village.

Newgass studied with masters of landscape photography, including John Blakemore and Thomas Joshua Cooper. In 1999 he attained a Master of Arts degree in Photography at De Montfort University under Paul Hill.

During the past five years his work has been shown in a several solo exhibitions in Romsey and Salisbury, at Freshfields Atrium in London and most recently at the Southampton City Art Gallery. His photographs are in a number of private collections.
