Paul Taplin - the difficulty of speaking
The 14 images presented here are taken form a body of work I initially began in 2001 entitled the difficulty of speaking. I started photographing specific areas of London already familiar to me through my journey to and from work with the intention of creating a personal document of stammering. The work is broadly influenced by an alternative approach to disability known as the social model which challenges the emphasis placed upon individual impairment as the cause of debility, and identifies society's limitations and prejudice as the real source of oppression. I wanted to project disfluency onto the world around me, partly as a form of catharsis, but also in recognition of my personal map of the city - a space of mimesis and imagination that becomes a catalyst for unconscious thoughts and desires.
