Simon
Callery &
Andrew Watson
Alfred's Castle is a previously-unexcavated Romano-British
and iron age site near Swindon. The activities of Callery and
Watson will encourage discussions among visitors to the site
to think about how the past is encountered through archaeology.
Their work will be grounded in the area where
the process and terminology of archaeology meet the concerns
and interests of the contemporary painter and photographer.
Callery and Watson are particularly keen that The Segsbury Project:
Alfred's Castle directs attention towards an experience of archaeological
scale, ranging from the minutiae of local detail to an overview
of the entire site in the landscape. Their actions and output
will foster an appreciation of the idea that our collective
and individual presence at these places is evidence of the continuity
of use and function of sites of historical and cultural significance.
The University of Oxford's contributions to Year
of the Artist are being organised in association with The Laboratory
at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art.
